Random rambling thoughts on a Monday evening…

Oh, geez. The Tigers already have Kenny Rogers, their ace pitcher, on the disabled list for another couple of months…NOW we just put our spectacular relief pitcher Joey Zumaya on the DL too! Until the end of July! The guy throws 103mph… or he did until he ruptured a tendon in the middle finger on his throwing hand. Ouch. Let’s see if the team can overcome this big loss to the bullpen!

Wow – the weather has been so great here the last couple of days. We’re trying to get a little yard work done – we have a bunch of issues with our lawn, all stemming from grubs. Soooo…we’ve put down grub killer, weed killer, and in some spots we’ve put down new grass seed and fertilizer! Hopefully we’ll get the lawn back into shape!

I found out I have to have an argument with the insurance companies: When I was in Buffalo and got very sick and went to the doctors, they naturally billed my insurance. Now the insurance company wants them to bill another insurance company (the one my union pays for…if I qualify). So it’s a big pain in the butt because no one wants to listen or solve it. Can’t they take a LITTLE of the jillions we give them and invest in some customer service/communications lessons for these people?!

Speaking of health, I’ve been trying to eat and drink more healthy foods – fell off the wagon today and had a McDonalds burger/fries…but I had Powerade to drink with it, does that count as helpful? I’ve been doing well the last couple of weeks – no fast food, small snacks throughout the day instead of a couple of huge meals…lots of water (and tea – especially iced tea!). Oh, and I’ve eliminated all creamer and 1/2 and 1/2 from my coffee – now it’s black with the brown “Raw sugar”, which I was told is healthier for you (or…not as bad as white sugar.) Hope that’s true!

Okay, TV talk: Heroes has been awesome. AND I’ve been able to watch both Stargate: SG1 and Stargate Atlantis, which have been equally awesome. I’m a big Stargate: SG1 fan, and this is the last season so I’m really enjoying it. Thanks to Chris I get to see them on tape! 🙂

Other TV news: The Amazing Race ended a good season with a somewhat weak finale, but that’s the way it goes with unscripted game show television! Survivor has a couple more episodes, (Thursday and Sunday) and then it’s done too – this has been a fun season for that show as well!

Oh, and Lost has rekindled my interest this season, so I’m enjoying the build up to the season finale. Yes, there are still moments that make me want to punch the producers, but those are less than they were last season! 🙂

A very good board meeting tonight for Williamston Theatre. A couple of problems solved and, although our cashflow is not what we want it to be and our ticket sales are light for this show, morale is high as we begin pre-production work for the 5th and final show of our 1st full season! (Which means, of course, that we’re well into planning for the 2007-2008 season! – I’ll talk more about that in the upcoming week or two!)

And lastly…a very exciting directing job looming on the horizon. I’ll be discussing that…very soon.

BookCrossing

This “Hide and Seek” type of Book Sharing is really cool.

The BookCrossing Website

I just think that this is such a neat thing, and I keep meaning to participate in it…like go and drop some books off in some random spots…but I’ve not done it yet. I think I may try and do it in the next week or so: we’re doing a little Spring cleaning, and I’ve got so many books that I’ve read and will not read again, yet think are worth sharing!

Has anyone out there heard of this, or participated in it? Just wondering!

Simplicity

Complexity is the natural state of things. Sophistication lies in your ability to SIMPLIFY complexity. It lies in your ability to make sense of the world around you. You can’t do everything. Understand what’s important and what’s not. Pick your focus and act.

A third review

Our review from the Lansing State Journal came out, it can be found here!

It’s a great review, very positive, giving praise to the cast, designers and director (all well deserved!)

Of course, we’re hoping that all of the reviews will help ticket sales, but we’re hoping this one will help the most: A) it’s a great review, and B) it’s the big paper that’s closest to us – the readership is our closest, biggest target audience. The Detroit Free Press is a huge paper in Michigan, but Detroit is a little over an hour away, and while we draw audiences from there, a larger part of our audience (so far) has come from closer. So, with a little luck, the Lansing State Journal review will remind some folks that we’re here and convince them to come see the show! 🙂

Some Reviews

We’ve gotten two reviews today, one of which will help sell tickets (Detroit Free Press), and one which will not (Lansing City Pulse). Both make some valid points, and both make some assertions that I disagree with wholeheartedly.

It’s interesting, as I’ve discussed, reading reviews. You have to have them, I suppose, but you’d prefer to ignore them. The two that came out today, for instance: One talks about how wonderful a particular performance was, and the other talks about how much they disliked that exact same performance. So, as we’ve known all along: Art is subjective. Still, though, we rely on these reviews to “Get the word out” – it’s cheaper than advertising.

I wonder, though, how many people in the world base whether they go to a play on the reviews? How many people rule out going to a show because of a review? And do we do it differently with movies, or books, or albums? And if so…why?

It’s pretty great!

Especially considering…

This is what it looked like about a year ago!

In fact, the second photo is from a journal entry on April 29, 2006! A year and a day ago!

Neat.

(PS – I’m reposting this on the WT LiveJournal. Sorry for any repeats!)

Neat!

Are you a book lover?
An art lover?
Either?
Both?

Check these out!

In other news…

We had a great opening night on Friday. Hopefully the reviews will be coming out this week, and hopefully they’ll help sell some tickets! Like most theatres in the state, we’re struggling for audience right now. Sadly, we have the shortest relationship with our audience of any of the professional theatres in the state, so it’s even harder! Still – things are moving along!

The Detroit Tigers are having a rough season so far. They’re 12-11, which is nice and decent, but they’ve blown a LOT of games they should’ve won, and they’re not looking like the team that went to the World Series last year. Let’s hope things turn around soon! I get to go downtown and see a game next week, can’t wait!

Happy Sunday!

Funny!!

Okay, do this:

1. go to google
2. click on “maps”
3. click on “get directions”
4. type “New York” in the first box (the “from” box)
5. type “London” in the second box (the “to” box)
6. click on “get directions”
7. scroll down to step #24

Nice.
