A sad, sad day.

Today we mourn the passing of a legend. James Doohan, best known for his portrayal of Montgomery Scott, “Scotty”, on the original Star Trek, passed away this morning from pneumonia and Alzheimer’s.

At 85, he’s the second member of the original crew to pass away. DeForest Kelley, who played Dr. McCoy, passed away in June of 1999.

Bringing to life one of the most beloved characters in the Trek mythos, Doohan starred in the 3 years of the original series, did several voices on the short-lived Star Trek Animated Series, portrayed Scotty in all of the original Star Trek movies as well as the film Star Trek: Generations, which bridged the gap between The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. In addition, he made a memorable appearance in The Next Generation, when his character Scotty was found after being in a transporter induced state of suspended animation for over 70 years.

    • Hey kateherself! Good to hear from you.
You know, I don’t have Wil Wheaton’s blog on my f-list, but I’ve checked it out several times and liked it. Maybe I’ll add it. Of course, that would mean I’d have to understand how to add non-LJ blogs to my friends list, and I’m a dolt, so it could take some time…

      • ok, tony– you go to this page, and at the top there is a link where you can add his feed to your friends list.
        it’s really easy!!
you’ll get it. i’ve been around here on LJ for about 4 years, it took me a really long time to get the hang of it. In the beginning, i couldn’t even figure out how to add a user picture!

  1. Doohan also provided several voices on the original series such as the robot Nomad, the computer M-5, and formless energy beings Sargon and Trelane’s father.
I had an opportunity to see him speak at a convention about 5 years ago. Regretably, he was already in early Altzheimer’s and parkinson’s and was a bit forgetful on stage. Also, he was supposed to sign autographs afterwards but was forced to cancel due to a shaky hand.
Nonetheless, a classy actor from a bye-gone era that for better or worse became a part of pop culture. As Scotty would say: “Here’s to ya, Lad.”

    • That’s right, I’d almost forgotten that he did those voices! (Bad Trekker, Bad!)
Even though I’ve been to several conventions and seen several of the stars, I never got the chance to see Doohan. I wish I could’ve.
