A loss for the theatre world

Today we mourn the loss of a tremendous American playwright, August Wilson.

August Wilson, winner of both Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, died this weekend from cancer. He was only 60 years old.

Take a moment, and read about this fascinating man. It’s a horrible shame that he was taken so young – we’ll never know what else he could’ve written.

Some of his most popular, award winning works are: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences and The Piano Lesson. If you’ve not read them, or seen them, give them a try – even you non-theatre types will find them very worthy.

    • It’s amazing, too – he had planned on making a whole series of plays – 10 in all, and he finished the last one and got it open just shortly before his death. Incredible.

    • You’re right, far too young. Boy, I think about the things I’m hoping to be doing at 60, the people I’m hoping to be loving and growing up with…I need to get in better shape, that’s for sure!

      • So, make a new years resolution early 🙂 Think of all of your family and loved ones (Oh and your LJ friends) and how LONG they want you to stay around and share and learn from/with you and it will help. Even the smallest of steps are greater than doing nothing at all.

  1. I hate cancer. I hate when it takes any life, let alone one of the most brilliant of this past century. An amazing, and truly inspiring man has passed on, and many are saddened by this loss, i am one.
