Okay,

Mr. Sulu is gay.

Now, I sat down to make this post about 3 times last night, and I found myself rewriting it, deleting it, over and over. Why? I suddenly worried “Well, what if I find that fact funny, and it makes me seem homophobic, or bigoted?”, “What if anyone reading my journal suddenly thinks I’m a giant jerk?!”

Well, listen. I’m not homophobic, I’m not anti-gay. I am, however, pro-silly. I’m pro-parody, and pro-satire, and pro-humor. I’m an equal opportunity laugher, I laugh at myself as much as I laugh at the rest of the world and I LOVE to make others do the same. To not see the silly in any situation, I believe, is a crime. To not take a situation that is rife with comic potential and mine it to create more silliness in the world is a sin.

SO.

George Takei has come out publically. That part’s not funny, it’s worthy of respect. Good for him. It’s a brave person who can stand up in front of the world and announce their true self knowing that it could make their life more difficult because of some small minded people.

AND

I also think this is good news for anyone who likes to laugh. Why?

Mr. Sulu is gay. The joke possibilities there are AWESOME! Have you SEEN Star Trek?! Stand-up comics all over the world are sharpening their pencils…

So, I’m here as a fan of Mr. Takei and Star Trek.
I’m here as a firm believer that sexual preference is as irrelevent as shoe size, age, race, eyecolor, or breakfast preferences.

I’m also here as someone who is eagerly anticipating the upcoming onslaught of phaser jokes.

Why? A little silly is good for the soul, that’s why.

Thoughts?

  1. Just for the record, wasn’t it a bit obvious (correct me if I’m wrong) in the episode where they all got REAL happy, when Spock was playing the Harp, and Sulu was hopping around dancing, with the crown of flowers?

    • Okay, so there may have been some signs…that episode was one, and then the deleted scene from Star Trek II, where he and Chekov get caught playing “Phaser, phaser, who’s got the phaser?”
