You have a boatload of trees in your yard!
      2. I’ll challenge you to try something.
This week, talk with your mouth full at work for an hour (like the coworkers you want to punch), and see if anyone notices.
      3. I’ll pick a colour that I associate with you.
Pink, the color of the star in your oft-used userpic!

What exactly is it that you DO at work?

      • 7. What Mary Does
Normally I work at a small community paper. We don’t have a classified advertising department or a circulation department, so along with one other person I run the “business” office. We sell classified ads and subscriptions, are the human resources and accounting departments, and man the reception desk.
Two years ago I got this pesky Canadian boss lady and she is all proactive and stuff so I also do the “team-building” and “leadership” activities, meetings and planning, etc. This particular aspect of my job was causing me a lot of stress before I got reassigned. If I had only known…
        And I write movie reviews.
Currently, while on loan, I am part of a team down at the BIG paper. We’re managing the conversion from one circulation system to another.
On this assignment I basically run a job on the new system and someone else runs a comparable job on the old system and then we compare the output.
We log the differences and fix anything we can. And then we do another, and another, and another, etc. We have a protocol of about 20 jobs per day on the two systems for seven publications on various run schedules, plus various random transaction batches that they throw in to mimic a real day. We never finish a day in a day, and sometimes even the dates on the two systems don’t match. Right now we’re working on August 31st 🙂 🙂 🙂
I do actually love the work. It’s needle-in-a-haystack solve-a-mystery sort of stuff and I’ve always enjoyed that. But the situation is just so strange.
We’re in the basement of an old building– not the main newspaper. We have no windows. We’re set at long tables with no dividers– not one second of privacy unless you leave the room. I’m an arm’s length from two people and within ear-shot (I can hear every word they say on the phone) of eight.
AND he has us lined up at these tables facing him like we’re in 4th grade. He had white boards put up on two walls and uses them just like blackboards. It’s just freaky. I need to take pictures somehow.
And that is exactly what I do at work. I sit here and listen to these 8 people breath in and out and I crunch numbers. This week we’ve been working until 6:30 or 7:00 each night. And I think I’ve been closer to going mad than at any time every before in my life. But I still sort of like it. Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

        • Now more of your posts make sense! 🙂 *laughing*
I love that you’re “on loan”! Darn those pesky Canadians!
I would love to see pictures of your 4th grade supervisory set up! How odd that must be!
And don’t go mad…you’d probably just be disappointed at how similar it is to real life anyway.

      7. I’ll ask you something I’ve always wanted to ask you.
Did I ever tell you about the weird-ass dream I had years ago that you made an appearance in, where I was supposed to be stage managing a show, and I left the booth during the show (for some important reason I can’t remember) and I got lost trying to get back, and ran into you while trying to find my way, and you were crying and said you couldn’t help me? Geez, that was an epic dream with a cast of thousands. Your appearance was particularly disturbing, though, because you were crying heavily, and I couldn’t help you OR find my way back. Weird dream. I gotta stop eating Hostess snacks before bed…

I’m so glad you didn’t marry that dork “Mike” that you dated in high-school. What a tool.

      7. I’ll ask you something I’ve always wanted to ask you.
What in the hell inspired you to get that tattoo?

      • So…I’m a funny, pink bulldog huh? LOL
As for the tattoo…I wanted something different, not some girly crap like a flower or heart…cause that’s just not me.
I wanted something that would peak curiousity, and thusly inspire conversation. You can’t look at my tattoo and go, “Oh, that’s a whatcha-whatcha”.
Nobody knows what the hell it is without asking. So when people see it, they ask. And that’s my story.

  1. wow I hate to do this to you during tech week but I am so curious! You can wait until the show opens….I am patient. That might be an answer for number 4 (in case you needed help….)

    • You okay? You sure? Are you okay? What’s wrong? Y’okay?
      1. I’ll respond with something random about you.

Hmmm….I’m going to say…chipmunk. Not sure why.
      7. I’ll ask you something I’ve always wanted to ask you.
What do you REALLY WANT TO DO for the next 10 years of your life?

      • Re: I’m okay…are you okay?? Are you sure you’re okay??!
Ahhh…management meetings. Good times, good times. Chipmunk huh? If I had been a little taller thats what I would have been at “Mouse World”* (not it’s real name to protect the innocent).
I will work on the 10 years question. That’s a hard one.

      • Re: You okay? You sure? Are you okay? What’s wrong? Y’okay?
p.s. A2 Starbucks may have had lay offs but the Starbucks here has hired four people to keep up with the demand so it works out!
