Quick hits

This is fun! I really enjoy XKCD!

We are getting SO CLOSE to baseball season! Man, I can’t wait!

The Mystery of Irma Vep is shaping up well – we’re starting tech tomorrow, it’ll be busy! A 10 hour rehearsal Tuesday, 2 10-out-of-12 hour rehearsals in a row (Wednesday and Thursday), and first preview on Friday! A busy week. Studio Arena Theatre is proving to be a nice place to be as a Guest Director, everyone’s been very professional, polite, friendly and helpful!

Fully Committed is going well at Williamston Theatre – a couple more weeks, and we’ll close with what, so far, looks like it’ll be our most successful show yet. Yay!

I had to buy a new wallet. It got me thinking – Wallets are such a personal thing. And every guy I talk to about this says the same thing: “Oh, man, you can’t just have any old wallet! You gotta get the one that works for YOU.” It’s funny, I can get shoes and not worry too much beyond “do they hurt my feet or make me look silly?”, I can buy a belt and the only question is “Black or Brown?” But I can spend a couple of hours looking for the right wallet: Front pocket, bi-fold, money clip on the outside. Clear picture-i.d. window on the other side. Inside, slots for 8 to 12 cards.

What about you – what common, everyday thing in your do you take the most care in picking out?

  1. Dave’s had the same wallet since he was 16. Everytime we’re out shopping, he won’t pick out a new one. I guess it’s some sort of attachment thing. (?)
I tend to pick out shoes like you pick out wallets….You know, color, size, style, shape, heel, frills….”Do I have a matching outfit? Oh crap I don’t, but I really like these so I guess I’ll have to get an outfit down the road…” that type of thing. I could spend hours in a shoe store….my friends won’t let me. They drag me out. Which, is a good thing.
I’ve also decided it’s a bad idea for me to get a job at one. I wouldn’t come home with much of a paycheck left.

  2. I hear you on the wallet thing. I’m a little like that too. Although my Mom was really picky. I remember I got her one for her birthday one year and it just happened to be JUST RIGHT. She went to the store where I bought it and got three of them. They lasted her until she died, I think.
I’m that way about planners. I’ve had a Palm, a Franklin Quest, then a Franklin Covey. I’ve had cheap ones and expensive ones. I’ve had two-pages-a-day, two-pages-a-month, and two-pages-a-week versions. These days I’m using your basic At A Glance academic calendar. It’s thin, and I get a month layout version AND a two-page week layout. I had one recently that had the week arranged differently on the page so that there was room for a task list for the week. That’s what I really want. But I can’t find it again. I miss not having a pocket in it, but then I don’t get things junked up in there. Almost every time I go to the office supply store I look at planners. I try to improve. I flirt with a larger size, a smaller size. Ones with pockets. You name it, I’ve tried it on. In the end, I’ll stick it out with this one and get a new one when it’s back-to-school time.
Maybe someday, I will find the perfect planner. And then I’ll be truly happy.

    • Yeah, I know what you mean about planners. I did the Dayplanner thing for a long time, then moved up to Palm Pilots, then those lost their battle with Pilot Pens, and became just “Palm”. Then I finally upgraded to my Treo, which is awesome. I love the interconnectedness in the Treo, how it all works together. And I’ve realized that although I miss actually “Writing” into a dayplanner, I’ve transferred those writing impulses into this journal, and some other projects!
