I always find it…oh, maybe “inspiring” is the word I want…when people who don’t do theatre come in and are amazed at the amount of time, work and detail that goes into what we do.
Friday: 8am-1pm Tech Director (TD) and Set Designer (SD) are hanging the star/sky drops. (They’re doing it as I type this, in fact!)
Friday 2-6 Lighting Designer/Master Electrician have the stage for lights
Friday 6-10 Rehearse, run through of show.
Friday after rehearsal: Painting onstage.
Saturday Morning: Set Crew will be in before rehearsal to do some more set work.
Saturday 10am to Noon: Sound Designer and Sound Crew set some levels and play with sound cues.
Saturday Noon to Midnight: Tech Rehearsal, we tech the show. All cast, crew.
Sunday Morning: Any tech work that needs to happen will happen – all departments can come in early. We’ll confirm details of this and departments can negotiate for space as we wrap up on Saturday at the end of Tech.
Sunday 1-6 Rehearsal: If needed, continue tech. Run the show with tech and costumes.
Sunday 6-? Tech director doing set notes. Also, painting may begin on starburst pattern on the floor.
Monday daytime: Space is open, departments can negotiate for time to work on notes.
Monday daytime: The new box office in the lobby will be painted.
Monday evening: Painting: Finishing the Starburst pattern on the floor.
Tuesday 10-4 Giant Cleaning of the building. Staff and volunteers. This will include inside the foyer, both lobbies, theatre, bathrooms, dressing rooms.
Tuesday 10-4: Paint: Seal the stage floor.
Tuesday 4:30 – 6 Photo Shoot
Tuesday 6-11: Rehearsal, Dress Rehearsal at 8pm.
Wednesday Office closed until Noon (Arts Rally at Capitol in Lansing from 9am to 10:30am)
Wednesday Noon to 4pm: Continue cleaning building, if needed.
Wednesday: Stage is currently open from 8am to 4pm for any department to work on notes.
Wednesday 6-11 Rehearsal, Dress Rehearsal at 8pm.
Thursday: Stage currently open during the day for any notes.
Thursday: 6-7:30 Rehearsal/notes.
Thursday 8pm: 1st Preview. Audience Talkback afterwards.
(And that, of course, doesn’t include any of the production meetings, designing, construction, scheduling, rehearsals, marketing, interviews, sponsor solicitation, program creation, ticket sales, or any of the many things that start months before First Preview.)
Then we do previews for a week while rehearsing during the day, and have the Official Opening the next Friday.
Yeah, but what about all those hours between midnight and 6am?
Slackers.
Mostly drinking and carousing.
For some reason I begin to wonder what Tech Day was like at the Globe for Shakespeare.
Probably something just like ours, but with a lot more candles and flaming torches.
