One way to have an interesting morning…

This morning I was on my way out to a Production Meeting that I was almost going to be late for when Sneakers, our dog, freaked out. She jumped up from where she’d been lazily watching me leave, and started going insane in front of the basement door.

“Hmmm…” said my uncanny spider-sense. “This is not normal behavior! Something strange is happening!”. (like I said, uncanny!)

Not seeing anything in the hallway that could be the cause of her barking jumping and clawing at the basement door I took another HUGE leap in logic… and opened the door.

It was the SOUND of the rushing water that first caught my attention. Only seconds later was my attention also caught by the sight of the large stream of water, about 4 feet off the ground, that was rocketing across my line of vision at the bottom of the staircase.

“Yep”, said the spider-sense, “Something strange is happening.”

What a week!

I’m back from my trip to New York. I was there from Sunday to Wednesday with the Senior Showcase from Otterbein College. I was hired this past Fall to work with the students and direct their Showcase which is, essentially, a show performed for casting agents, casting directors, and producers. The show is designed so that the graduating BFA actors can showcase their abilities and be seen by people who may want to audition them or represent them.

I’m happy to say that the Showcase went really well. All of the actors garnered interest to varying degrees, all getting a lot of headshot/resume requests, many being asked to come by for interviews, and a few getting auditions scheduled! I was very proud of how hard they worked, how professional they all were, and how well they handled themselves!

Unfortunately, on the plane on my way back to Michigan, I started feeling lousy andafter waking up with my throat on fire I went to the doctor to find out I have a sinus infection. After getting my antibotics and antifeelinglousy medicine, I’ve arrived at rehearsals for Shakespeare abridged which is coming along great. I’m hoping the medicines kick in soon, because I currently feel like re-heated roadkill.

That’s my story right now. I’m going to rehearse, maybe write more later, if I can stay conscious.

First Student Matinee!

This is cool!

We’ve got a full house of High School students who are loving our production of The Effect Of Gamma Rays On Man In-The-Moon Marigolds!

This project, graciously underwritten by Verizon, is allowing several High Schools in Michigan to get their students a first-hand look at an American classic.

Possibly even more importantly, it’s an American classic about someone their own age, struggling with issues not unlike some of their own struggles.

And, possibly most importantly, it gives some young people who’ve never seen a play the chance to experience the power of a live theatrical performance.

It’s a very cool day!

Sunday night wrapup

Power came back late this evening! Turns out the windstorm knocked out power to over 300,000 people in Michigan alone!

Also turns out that the trouble I’ve been having with my iPhone has not actually been with the iPhone, but with AT&T. Seems the windstorm caused grief with a bunch of their service in a few states.

And now we go back to work! After a nice Christmas break, it’s back to the theatre tomorrow – it’s only been 5 days, but it feels like forever since I was there! Launching into several projects, the start of 2009 promises to be busy, but very exciting!

Last thought of the night: we were watching “Planet Earth” on Discovery – it’s amazing, by the way – and my son says “Man! Our planet is just so… COOL!”

He’s right. 🙂

Powerless…

And from the massive windstorm last night we are now given the chance to live without electricity for an unspecified amount of time.

This will be fun until the temperature drops too far, or until we need water that our electric well-pump provides. Sadly, both of those things will happen on the next few hours! 🙂

The power company changed their first estimate of “approximately 4 hours” to “unsure”. Since it’s been out for almost 8 hours now, that doesn’t bode well!

For everyone celebrating it:

Merry Christmas!
We were woken at 3:30 by Max, who asked “Is it too early!?!? Santa was here already!!”
He was instructed to go to sleep and not wake us until 7am. He, therefore, went to the couch and stared at presents under the tree while quivering and twitching with anticipation for about 6 minutes before returning to the edge of our bed to ask again.

After some more sleep was coaxed out of him, we all gathered at 7, and had a great morning (that’s turning into a wonderful afternoon) of Quality Family Time.

I hope everyone’s having a wonderful morning, and sharing some togetherness with loved ones!
