QUOTES: Change. Making A Difference.

So, as Winter turns to Spring (we HOPE – please stop snowing!), it’s the season for change.  Let’s see what happens if we embrace that.

My life is pretty great.  But, like everyone, there are things that could use a re-evaluation and some tweaking.  Plus, it’s been a month of various changes happening, and when changes are thrust upon you, it can make you examine the rest of your life.  Change is essential for growth and forward momentum no matter what, right?  I mean, it’s always a mix: some good, some less good, but such is life, no?   It’s interesting, though, it’s also been a week of watching people react to change in different ways, in different projects and different aspects of life.  Sometimes change is clearly good.  Sometimes change is made with good intentions, and still fails.  Sometimes people think they’re doing something good, and others decide it’s not.  Sometimes people react politely, sometimes they don’t.  Such is life.

I’ll tell you what, though – I would rather attempt to change the things I don’t like about my life, and see those attempts fail, than sit idly by and simply complain about those things.  This is probably the only life I’ve got, and I can’t come up with a good reason to sit in stagnation knowing that some things aren’t working and just do nothing about it.

So, yes.  Spring.  A Change Of Seasons.  And a time for examination, exploration and action!

You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.
– Shirley Hufstedler,  Former US Secretary of Education

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.
– Will Rogers (1879-1935)

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.
– William Arthur Ward

We can choose to be affected by the world or we can choose to affect the world.

Don’t find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain.

Thursday Random Pic Post!

A handful miscellaneous stuff from the life of a Dad and Director:

I’ve been playing with the Vine app on my iPhone a lot lately, it’s fun.  I let my kids play with it while we were waiting around in a phone store the other day.  What did we learn from this?  The following: Dads, just because your kids are old enough to not run off in a store does NOT mean you can close your eyes and relax!  😉

A nice promo photo for Sweet Mercy by Melody Cooper, which I’m directing at MSU right now – we open next week!

The Stephen King book Under The Dome was pretty good, I enjoyed it.  They’ve made a tv series of it that will premiere this Summer.  As a promo, you can see what your house would look like if it was “Under The Dome”.  So here’s mine:domed!Scary, right?  Of course, if there were a way to make this whole dome thing equal less leaf raking in Autumn, it could be worth it…

Hey! Check this out!  The Williamston Theatre was featured in the Actors’ Equity Association Newsletter this month!  (AEA, for those who may not know, is the union for professional theatre actors and stage managers)  You can get the Newsletter HERE and check us out on page 4!  (Below is a pic of what it looks like!)

And, in other Williamston Theatre news, here are 3 of the 6 plays we’ll be doing next year!
books

Of course, I can’t really reveal the titles yet… but trust me, they’re pretty awesome.  🙂

Happy Thursday, everybody!

Wednesday Update: Keeping all the plates spinning…

So much good stuff going on!

Williamston Theatre presents Shirley Valentine, by Willy Russell!

Starring Julia Glander and directed by Lynn Lammers, this beautiful, witty show runs March 21st through April 21, 2013.  Get more info at www.williamstontheatre.org

In other news in my life, the show I’m directing at MSU,  Sweet Mercy, opens next week.  It’s a beautiful play about survivors of the Rwandan genocide that deals with humanity, loss, empathy and our place in the world.

And, I’m excited to say that in about a week we start rehearsals for the next play I’m directing, 10:53 by Annie Martin.

Plus, I get to work with students from Otterbein University next month as we present their Senior Showcases to agents and directors in New York and L.A., and then later in the Spring I get to re-mount the beautiful production of Ernie by Mitch Albom at the City Theatre in Detroit.  After 2 amazingly successful summers, we’re bringing it back for a 3rd year!

Right now, reading plays, picking next season for Williamston Theatre, and looking for some coffee.  🙂

Happy Wednesday, everybody!

Moving through life

“Surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard.”
Colin Powell

“Self-importance is our greatest enemy. Think about it – what weakens us is feeling offended by the deeds and misdeeds of our fellowmen. Our self-importance requires that we spend most of our lives offended by someone.”
– Carlos Castaneda

“To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity.”

– William Arthur Ward

“I always expect some people to be offended. I know I ruffle feathers but some people’s feathers need a little ruffling. And remember: just because someone is offended doesn’t mean they’re in the right. Some people are offended by multiculturalism, homosexuality, abortion, atheism – what should we do? Ban all those things? You have the right to be offended, and I have the right to offend you. But no one has the right to never be offended.

I never actively try to offend though. That’s churlish, pointless and frankly too easy. But I believe you should say what you mean. Be honest. No one should ever be offended by truth.”
– Ricky Gervais

Video Smorgasbord. Fun!

So, has the last 10 days been incredibly busy for everyone else as well?
Thankfully, all the work I’ve been doing has been on terrific projects, and I’m loving it.
Yeah, I also have been dealing with cold/flu/sinus stuff, which has been *less* fun than the great work.
Still, lots of good things going on, including a handful of fun videos that I thought I’d share today, for fun!

The video trailer for our next show at Williamston Theatre

I’ve been playing with the Vine app on my iPhone, it’s a fun app that lets you do a variety of styles of 6-second videos that loop.
It’s been fun exploring it, and for the heck of it I started a series of videos related to Fringe.  (In Fringe, the color sequence of Green Green Green Red always had a big significance. I figured that’d be fun to play with! 🙂

Turn the sound on, and check these out!
(EDIT:  Okay, I can’t for the life of me figure out how to embed the videos into this blog!  Here are the 3 links instead!)

Lunch Surprise

A Trip To The Doctor

Ah, silly fun.
Lastly:  A not-safe-for-work, adult language, you’ve-been-warned Prince Video from his appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show!
Prince!
Okay, Now: Back to sleep.  But tomorrow – back to fighting the sinus infection, making plays, and even some Quality Family Time.  Excellent.

Tuesday Quotes: Getting through the day productively.

“Slow down and remember this: Most things make no difference. Being busy is often a form of mental laziness – lazy thinking and indiscriminate action.” – Tim Ferris

“If I’ve learned anything in my shaky life as an artist, it’s that you must stop talking and spinning and whining and start making your thing today. Pick up a camera. Pick up an easel. Open your laptop and turn off your Internet connection while you write. Find a starting point. Ignore the voices. Ignore the critics. Reward yourself for having ideas by valuing them enough to believe in them.” – Shane Nickerson

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” – Leonardo da Vinci

Terrific Things

Terrific thing to hear as a couple is entering your theatre from the lobby for their first visit:
“Oh, wow! What a beautiful little place! This is gorgeous!”

An even more terrific thing to hear from another couple, as they excitedly exit after the show smiling, laughing, holding hands, and she’s wiping tears from her eyes:
“We have to come back, and bring the kids!”

Sometimes, a couple remarks in passing can really make you feel like you’re doing something worthwhile.

Thanks, Universe.

Link-tastic Tuesday!

Silly app called Vine lets you make 6 second movies:
Saturday at the Theatre

Sunday Coffee with my Daughter!

SPRING TRAINING! It’s been a long off-season for baseball, and I can’t wait to get it back! 🙂

Really neat clip on the post-production process of the new Star Trek movie that’s coming out soon! (Potentially minor spoilers, if you’ve not paid any attention to any previews of the movie at all!)

My son has the flu. Booo. The good news is that he was laying on the couch, and decided to turn off the tv, and use the iPad to write a play! 🙂 Cool. Still, having the flu is not good, so here are some tips on avoiding it!

My birthday has come and gone, but if anyone is searching for a Valentine’s Day present for me, how about this cool book? September’s Notebook

Happy Tuesday!
