Friday Quotes: Storytelling

“Do they care?  That’s it.  That’s the only thing that ever matters.  Do they care?  Is it interesting, are the jokes funny, are the characters relatable, are the scary parts scary?  The more you do, the more you realize there’s only one thing you can do… we still have the same mandate, which is Make ‘em care”.
-Joss Whedon

“Artists use lies to tell the truth. Yes, I created a lie. But because you believed it, you found something true about yourself.”
-Alan Moore

“You can fix anything but a blank page.”
-Nora Roberts

“Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can’t remember who we are or why we’re here.”
-Sue Monk Kidd

“It is your obligation to speak things that have truth, because this is your life’s work.”
-Judith Black

“Rule one of reading other people’s stories is that whenever you say ‘well that’s not convincing’ the author tells you that’s the bit that wasn’t made up. This is because real life is under no obligation to be convincing.”
-Neil Gaiman

Logos for next season!

Boy, it’s been a busy couple of weeks!  We got a show open at Williamston Theatre, I went to San Diego Comic Con, life has been good!

Here, just for fun, are the logos for the 2013-2014 Season at Williamston Theatre!  A couple may undergo minor tweaking, but this is the general look of the season, and I love it.  I am beyond excited about the lineup for next year – the scripts, the casts, the production teams  – so much goodness!

Theatres use a lot of these lamps – this is the picture I took to remember the details so I could order more of the right one! Feeling generous? Feel free to donate a box! 😉

I spent 4th of July cleaning out my garage. (These things happen….) and in a box of “miscellaneous stuff” I found this picture of my kids from about 10 years ago.

*sigh*

Now they’re both teenagers, and I suddenly found myself alone in the middle of the garage feeling melancholy and old, but also incredibly lucky for my life and family!

Some Random Thoughts On A Wednesday

-Finished up callbacks for next season. Manohman, there’s such a fabulous, excited feeling of “The Future” when you’re at this stage – knowing the great scripts that are coming up, the potential that you get pairing those with talented production teams and casts, so much anticipation! I’m like a kid in a candy store who just got a handful of cash from Dad to get whatever I want!

-So we’ve been playing the game “King of Tokyo”. It’s a ton of fun, the whole family is enjoying it! Basically you’re a monster rampaging Tokyo (you know, like you do), and so is everyone else at the table, so you try to beat them! Really fun family game – strategy, luck, teamwork, and silliness. 🙂 Here’s a little video (My wife was playing too, but didn’t want to be in the video!)

-So far this summer I’ve seen the two big blockbusters I was excited about, Star Trek: Into Darkness and Man of Steel, and I can say this: They were both good reminders that, as a storyteller, what matters is the storytelling. Flash and glitz are great, but if the *story* isn’t strong, if the characters aren’t compelling, then the experience is weak. A good reminder as I launch into plans for next season at the Williamston Theatre, where our audiences are counting on good experiences.

-Speaking of movies: In a public restroom at a movie theatre. A long line of urinals with men standing in front of them, most of them doing what you do at a urinal in a public restroom… except the guy next to me, who is talking. Now, people talk in restrooms. But he was talking on his phone, loudly. Well, we thought he was just “on his phone”. Turns out, he was Skyping someone from his smart phone. Yes. VIDEO chat. At a urinal. With what, it turned out, was a ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY who had also just seen the movie that he had seen, and wanted to chat about it. And we all hear them asking him “Dude, are you in the restroom?!” and to prove that he was, he waves his phone around the room so they can SEE the long line of urinals, and the men standing at them^!! (It’s rare that you make eye contact with another man at a urinal, but there were several of us looking around at each other with little bemused head-shakes at the guy and his videochat!) *sigh* People are amazing. It would’ve been the perfect time for a *facepalm* but, y’know… that would’ve been unsanitary.

-This week has been a lot of fun: my brother-in-law Bill is back for a visit from Taiwan with his wife, Joy, and their 3 kids. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve seen them, the kids are super sweet, and we’ve had a wonderful time visiting and hanging out! Also, it’s been a lot of fun comparing all the cultural differences, and the similarities, and just enjoying the reminder of how much people all over the planet have in common. Coming up this week – a Tigers baseball game with the whole family!

^Footnote: After he left, the guy who had been on the other side of him said, to no one in particular, “I FEEL VIOLATED!” which, of course, got a nice laugh from everyone else there.

Happy Wednesday, everybody! Be safe out there!

Finally! Williamston Theatre’s FULL 2013-2014 Season!

We’ve finally got the rights secured to our 6th show for next season, so we can eliminate that pesky “TBA” from our 2014 Summer Slot!

So, here’s the COMPLETE Williamston Theatre 2013-2014 season.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK
Adapted by Stehen Mallatratt from the book by Susan Hill

It was a dark and stormy night…
Join us for a spine tingling tale of things that go bump in the night. A neighborhood is held hostage by the shadowy figure of a woman who haunts the locale where her illegitimate child was killed years before. Legend holds that any soul encountering her will perish on the spot! But will they solve the mystery before they, too, fall victim to her deadly gaze?

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS
By Joe DiPietro
November 29, 2013 to December 29, 2013

Meet Nick – a single guy from New Jersey with four adoring, and adorable, grandparents. Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma fold Nick into their warmth every Sunday for a traditional dinner with la famiglia, and try to impart to him the importance of family, a good meal and a good wife. When he tells them of his plans to move across the country for the job of his dreams, the news doesn’t sit so well. They go into full crisis mode and pull out every scheme in the book to get him to stay close to home – including baiting him with pretty Caitlin O’Hara, the girl next door. This is one to share with your family this holiday season.

THE LION IN WINTER
By James Goldman
January 23, 2014 to February 23, 2014

Uneasy is the head on which the crown lies, and uneasy the truce between a matchless king and queen. This is the legendary story of King Henry II of England, and the battle between his fiercely competitive sons to be chosen next in line for the thrown. Add in his banished Queen, the notorious Eleanor of Aquitaine, mother of said sons and equally competitive, and King Louis of France, and two countries find themselves on the brink of bloody war at the whim of a temperamental and power hungry family. This classic tale of deception, manipulation and world dominance will draw you into its irresistible web, and might not let you go without a fight.

FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE
By Terrence McNally
March 20, 2014 to April 20, 2014

Frankie is a waitress at a second rate restaurant who gives in to the temptation of a one-night stand with her co-worker Johnny after a few weeks of working together. But Johnny has other ideas. A compulsive talker, and hopeless romantic, Johnny begins the process of wooing Frankie, hoping that she will return his proclamations of love. World-weary and battle-worn, Frankie needs a lot of convincing that this won’t be yet another disappointment in life. As their night together unfolds, they are surprised by the discoveries they make about each other, and themselves. Winner of the Dramatists Guild Hull Warriner Award, this bittersweet comedy combines poignancy and laughter as it traces the unlikely romance that begins to develop between two middle-aged “losers.”

Jed and Boyd need your cash!  Have you ever wanted to invest in a Broadway Musical?  In this outrageous musical comedy, two wanna-be tycoons are desperate to line up funding for their new project, “The Big Bang”, so they’ve set up a “backers’ audition” and you’re invited!  With a cast of hundreds, the overblown extravaganza they’ve written is the biggest thing Broadway has ever seen and depicts the entire history of the world – from the formation of the planets right through the most important events – Adam and Eve!  The Pyramids!  Cher!  Will Broadway ever be the same?  This zany song-and-dance romp will leave you breathless!

I’m really excited about this season, some terrific pieces and some challenges for us.  I love the blend of the contemporary stuff and some classics, some heartwarming stuff and a lot of life affirming joy.  Plus, next season we’ll be bringing back our Dark Nights In Billtown festival, as well as announcing a few more special projects.  The future looks good!  🙂

TBA SUMMER SHOW!
We can’t reveal the title yet, still in negotiations, but our final show of the season is going to be one you don’t want to miss!!

Wednesday Update: Keeping all the plates spinning…

So much good stuff going on!

https://twitter.com/TonyCaselli/status/311892551210786816

Williamston Theatre presents Shirley Valentine, by Willy Russell!

Starring Julia Glander and directed by Lynn Lammers, this beautiful, witty show runs March 21st through April 21, 2013.  Get more info at www.williamstontheatre.org

In other news in my life, the show I’m directing at MSU,  Sweet Mercy, opens next week.  It’s a beautiful play about survivors of the Rwandan genocide that deals with humanity, loss, empathy and our place in the world.

And, I’m excited to say that in about a week we start rehearsals for the next play I’m directing, 10:53 by Annie Martin.

Plus, I get to work with students from Otterbein University next month as we present their Senior Showcases to agents and directors in New York and L.A., and then later in the Spring I get to re-mount the beautiful production of Ernie by Mitch Albom at the City Theatre in Detroit.  After 2 amazingly successful summers, we’re bringing it back for a 3rd year!

Right now, reading plays, picking next season for Williamston Theatre, and looking for some coffee.  🙂

Happy Wednesday, everybody!

A great Tech Weekend

Tonight we finished up a great tech weekend for End Days.

A shot of the set.

20130120-231712.jpg

I really like this show, and was reminded this weekend of the importance of teamwork. It makes a huge difference, and I am really proud of how beautiful the piece is turning out to be, thanks to the hard work and talent of a lot of people coming together with a common goal.

20130120-230904.jpgAndrew Head as Jesus, Emily Sutton-Smith as Sylvia Stein

This was one of those weeks where building renovations, production needs and institutional schedules all had to be juggled by a whole bunch of folks working at the top of their game to make it all come together. It’s always inspiring to be in the middle of a successful project like that, and I consider myself a lucky man to work with the people I work with!

Fun On The Set of “boom”

The play boom, which starts previews at Williamston Theatre next week, is a ton of fun.  This week we’ve had a blast as we added the tech elements to the show – There’s a saltwater fish tank that just arrived!  Preuss Pets, of Lansing, is donating the use of the tank and fish, and assisting with care and maintenance!

Here’s the crew from Preuss Pets setting up the tank, along with Janine Woods Thoma, the set designer.

Here’s Steve from Preuss Pets, and Aral Gribble, the actor who will do the most with the fish, being VERY excited that the fish have arrived!

And then here’s a shot from a moment of the play, what a mess!  Good thing that tank is sturdy, this place is a mess!  🙂

Move forward.
